With the large-scale integration of renewable generation, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and a wide range of power-electronic-interfaced equipment, modern power systems are undergoing profound changes in their structural configurations, operating characteristics, and dynamic behaviour. The diversification of generation technologies, controlled fault-current responses, increasingly complex operating conditions, and multi-timescale dynamic interactions have introduced new features in system fault behaviour, condition monitoring, and protection boundaries. These developments also place greater demands on fault analysis, anomaly awareness, fault diagnosis, and protection technologies. Meanwhile, advances in artificial intelligence, advanced signal processing, wide-area measurement, digital twins, and real-time simulation are creating new theoretical foundations and technical pathways for intelligent sensing, accurate diagnosis, and enhanced security in modern power systems.
